Carma taped up a picture of Robert Lee and Kristen Jenkins under Melissa’s picture on the dry erase board and looked back and forth between Melissa, Robert, Kristen and Ronald.

“So we had Melissa who was dating Robert, and Ronald who was obsessed with Melissa, and Robert who was sleeping with Kristen, and Melissa who was seeing other guys. Don’t you think Melissa would have confided in her boyfriend about the fact that Ronald’s obsession of her had turned into a severe form of stalking?” she asked Harold, never taking her eyes off the kids’ photos.

“I would think so.”

“I would have thought so, too. I would also think that our Mr. Popular, also known as number one Quarterback, wouldn’t have been thrilled at the idea of some guy, especially one who was so far beneath his social status like Ronald, was not only stalking his girl but snapping pictures of her, too.”

“I know I would have been pissed,” Harold said without a second thought.

“Pissed enough to want to fight?” Carma asked him.

“Quite possible.”

“Pissed enough to kill?”

“No way. As a man, I would want to defend my girl’s honor and my ego, but as a human I could never kill someone in cold blood.”

“Me either. Do you believe that she didn’t have anything to do with Ronald?” Carma wondered aloud.

“Honestly, yeah. I can’t imagine she would give a guy like him, who was creeping her out, the time of day.”

“So I guess we can rule out a love triangle there. But, according to Kristen, she was hooking up with other guys outside of her relationship.” Carma pried her eyes off the board and looked at Harold. “There’s no telling who and how many other guys she was seeing or hooking up with though. It’s kind of sickening to think about. I mean, where the hell were her parents?”

Harold shrugged.

She sat down at her desk and unlocked her bottom drawer and pulled out the diary. “The answers to all of our questions hopefully are in here,” she said, running a hand over the smooth pink velvet surface of the book. She took a deep breath and opened the book. Turning to the first page she scanned through it, flipping through the pages as she went. “Looks like it doesn’t start to get interesting until her junior year.”

“Isn’t that when she started dating Robert?”

“Yep, right here on August thirtieth.”
